5 Wedding Photography Tips Every Couple Should Know

By Brandon Schwartz – Lead Photographer, NorthWoods Signature Events

Hey friends! Brandon here. After photographing hundreds of weddings over the years, I’ve learned one important truth: no two love stories are the same - but the ingredients for stress-free, magical wedding photos are. Whether you’re planning a ballroom celebration, a backyard wedding, or an intimate elopement, these simple tips will help you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to shine on your big day.

1. Choose a Timeline That Gives You Breathing Room

One of the biggest game-changers for gorgeous, natural photos is your timeline. I always recommend building in a 10–15 minute cushion between major events - getting ready, first look, family portraits, ceremony, etc.
Why?
Because the best images happen when you’re not rushed. The small buffer ensures:

  • No stress if hair/makeup runs long

  • Plenty of time for beautiful candid moments

  • A more relaxed experience for everyone involved

Think of it as planning room for magic.

2. Consider a First Look (Even If You’re Unsure!)

I know - tradition is important! But a first look doesn’t take away from that emotional aisle moment. In fact, it often enhances it.
Here’s what couples tell me:

  • “It calmed our nerves instantly.”

  • “We got to soak in the moment privately.”

  • “We loved having extra portrait time together.”

A first look allows us to capture intimate, genuine reactions while giving you more time later in the day to enjoy your guests. But if you choose to keep it traditional - that’s totally okay too! I’ll work your timeline to fit your vision.

3. Prep Your Details Box for the Morning

Those “pretty” flat-lay photos don’t happen by accident. If you want your details captured beautifully, place everything in one box the night before:

  • Rings

  • Invitations

  • Jewelry

  • Shoes

  • Boutonnieres

  • Vow books

  • Perfume/cologne

  • Anything sentimental

This little box saves time and ensures nothing gets missed. Pro tip: Ask your florist to leave extra loose greenery—it photographs beautifully.

4. Think About Light - It Truly Matters

The right lighting can turn an ordinary photo into a wow moment.
Here’s a quick guide I give all my couples:

  • Getting Ready: Near a window, natural light whenever possible

  • Ceremony Time: Golden hour ceremonies (1–2 hours before sunset) photograph like a dream

  • Reception: Uplighting and candlelight add warmth and atmosphere

If you're not sure about your venue’s lighting, send me photos or a video. I love helping couples plan beautiful photo-friendly spaces.

5. Be Present - The Camera Will Do the Rest

The best photos don’t come from perfect posing. They come from genuine emotion - laughing with your wedding party, holding hands during the ceremony, sneaking a kiss during sunset photos.
My job is to guide you, direct when needed, and capture your story authentically.
Your job? Just enjoy your day. Trust me - the joy shows on camera every single time.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding day is a whirlwind of love, celebration, and unforgettable moments. As your photographer, my goal is to make the experience easy, comfortable, and fun. These small tips go a long way in creating timeless photos you'll cherish for life.
